Depth perception in flight relies on a variety of visual cues—lines, textures, shading, the horizon, and other ground features—to judge distance from the surface. When those cues disappear or become very weak, your brain has less information to gauge how high you are or how far away the surface is, so you can misjudge depth. This specific misperception is the height/depth illusion: you may feel you’re higher than you actually are, or conversely misjudge your distance to the surface, which can lead to unintended climbs or descents. The remedy is to rely on and continually cross-check your flight instruments—the attitude indicator and the altimeter—and maintain a proper instrument scan, especially in cue-poor environments like over open water, featureless terrain, or at night.

Vection involves a sensation of self-movement created by the moving visual scene, not a misjudgment of depth from a lack of cues. Autokinesis is the perceived motion of a stationary light in darkness, a motion perception issue unrelated to depth cue loss. Crater Illusion refers to a different perceptual effect related to ground features rather than the general depth cue deficit.
